I have always been interested in history, as it allows us to deeply understand human nature in all its facets and expressions. I am equally interested in science, as it is the "timeless aristocracy," and obviously, along with philosophy and art, they form the driving forces of human creation. The history of Greece, therefore, states that Greeks, centuries ago, opened up to the world and thrived through seafaring. In more modern times, the sea played a significant role in the post-war reconstruction of the country.
I knew that Mr. Simos P. Palios rightfully represents this long-standing maritime tradition, as he is probably the only one whose grandparents were captains or shipowners. At the same time, I knew from mutual acquaintances, such as Dr. Stamatis Krimizis – both hail from Vrontados, Chios – about the deep admiration he holds, above all and everything, for science and scientists.
When he suggested that we create a book where we would talk about seafaring, Greek shipowners, and shipowners – focusing on their significant connections that Greece could and should benefit from – as well as the great scientists we have, an invaluable human resource in which the country must invest, I accepted with great joy, but also a certain kind of curiosity, to be honest.
I thought that he himself and his life could be a very precise magnifying lens that shows us and clarifies something broader...
