This book represents an edited version of the first part of the doctoral research by Xenia Eleftheriou, which falls under the field of History Didactics and studies the Public History of the Holocaust of Thessaloniki's Jews, with a central focus on school history.
The events during the Days of Remembrance of the Holocaust, the erection of new memorials, the organization of permanent and temporary exhibitions in the museums of Thessaloniki and in cultural spaces, the naming and renaming of streets in Thessaloniki, the placement of "Memory Markers" to indicate historical sites, the hosting of international and nationwide scientific conferences, workshops, and educational seminars on this historically "conflictual" traumatic issue, as well as the increase in publishing production, are examined in the present research.
Developments in the scientific field of History pertain to the production and dissemination of historical knowledge, the formation of heterogeneous forms of historical culture, and the shaping of collective identities in relation to the past and the lived experiences of social subjects.
The contemporary context of History Didactics necessitates the awakening of all towards the process of critical scrutiny of the broader public use of History, as well as any form of information.
Today, one of the newer and more interesting subjects of contemporary scientific research is the examination of the relationships between academic and Public History. The teaching of Local History, serving as an alternative form of historical education, encourages experiential understanding and research of the traumatic historical past.
The surge of interest in the contentious memory of the Holocaust from the social and humanitarian sciences, Public History, and civil society raises the demand for multiple processing of the historical trauma.
The central question that this study attempts to address is whether and to what extent historical amnesia and ignorance about the genocide of the Greek Jews continues to exist in school education, despite international developments regarding Holocaust Education from global educational organizations.
