Cultural Criminology emerged in the mid-1990s as a response to the limitations of traditional criminological theories, particularly those that downplay the symbolic, emotional, and cultural dimensions of crime.
As a subfield of Critical Criminology, it examines the criminal phenomenon as a social and political problem within the context of specific circumstances and power relations, highlighting the cultural processes that surround it. At the same time, its focal area includes various other aspects that contribute to shaping social perceptions around crime, deviance, and social control, such as representation in the media, popular culture, subcultures, everyday practices, and the lived experience of crime from the perspective of both the offender and the victim.
All these issues are explored through the phenomenology of everyday life in late modernity, recognizing the changing cultural significance of contemporary consumer culture and its particular impact on human action. The way poverty is experienced in a society of abundance, the interpretation of consumption as a form of escape, ontological insecurity, the ever-growing social and economic inequalities combined with the abhorrent ways in which power and crime control are exercised, are among the research focus of Cultural Criminology.
These are issues that require theoretical and methodological tools aimed at revealing the meaning of human action. This study seeks to capture precisely these theoretical and methodological orientations, aspiring to open a field of dialogue for a more systematic engagement with the scientific current of Cultural Criminology in Greek literature and research.
