In this book, we aim to highlight how psychoanalytic thought can shed light on "what is happening" in preschool education classrooms and how a psychoanalytic perspective can serve as a valuable tool that will contribute to, enhance, and enrich all those involved in this (the children, the educators, the parents, and the "experts").
Moreover, it is worth providing preschool education with the space and depth it deserves, as early experiences in all contexts (including the educational/school context) have the capacity to significantly influence the entire subsequent development.
The book draws material from our long-standing therapeutic experience with preschool-age children, our collaboration with preschool educators, and our teaching on these subjects at higher education institutions.
We advocate for the need for empathic observation within the classroom, for thinking that seeks to find connections between behavior and the multiple possible causes of it, as well as for the emotional availability of adults who take on the responsibility of accompanying young children on their first journey into organized learning and teaching.
Our ultimate goal is singular: to invite readers to reflect with us on the first steps in school and what these may mean.
