The first appearance of Sherlock Holmes in 1887 (in A Study in Scarlet) is particularly interesting from a historical perspective. For the first time, European cities had multiplied to such an extent that it was impossible to know more than a small percentage of their inhabitants, resulting in characters getting lost in London, which was the modern city of that time.
A Study in Scarlet is the first novel in the Holmes detective series and partly introduces the reader to Doyle's future series. The story includes the introduction of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson through mutual friends and a mystery revolving around a corpse found in a derelict house in Brixton. An excellent beginning for the Sherlock Holmes series and the legendary duo that revolutionized crime fiction.
It is also very interesting to learn about the roots of Watson and Sherlock and how their partnership was formed. This book is highly recommended for those who enjoy the Sherlock Holmes detective novels, as well as for those who appreciate the works of Arthur Conan Doyle in general.
