Information about Tracheostomy

Tracheostomy refers to the surgical opening of the trachea and the placement of a special tube (tracheostomy tube) within it, for the purpose of ventilating the patient, bypassing the upper airway. The reasons may vary. Patients who may also need a tracheostomy are those suffering from conditions that lead to obstruction of the upper airway or increased secretion production from the bronchi and lungs.

A tracheostomy can be performed urgently or scheduled in surgery. It can be temporary or permanent.

Helpful Tips

• The incision should be cleaned if it is dirty with sterile saline.
• A clean new dressing should be applied if necessary.
• Gauze should not be cut, as fibers can enter the incision and may cause infection.
• A dressing is necessary during the first 24 hours after the procedure.
• The tracheostomy tube can be removed in patients who show improvement.
