Description

Description

This book explores a fundamental issue of Greek society, which holds a special place in Greek drama. The political system, and consequently the state, leaves its mark on society, influencing it in various ways. However, society itself also attempts to develop its forces through its representatives, to influence the state machinery, and at times to achieve self-determination.

The unity of society is far from given, and as a result, various conflicting situations arise within it, either between groups or between individuals and groups, or among individuals. This process of mutual influence between the state and society, with the political system as an intermediary factor, largely shapes the image of modern Greece.

Social and professional categories, such as journalists, play an important role in this relationship, as they can shape situations in either a positive or negative direction. Leading political and state figures, such as Otto, Trikoupis, Diligiannis, and Venizelos, play a distinctive role in shaping the political-social and national climate, and therefore they have been utilized in drama.

The conflict between the state and part of society is sometimes inevitable, revealing the dynamics of society or its representatives, who do not tolerate the imposition and authoritarianism of the state. Playwrights describe and analyze situations either in a comedic and satirical manner, or in a particular, critical, and reflective way, or sometimes in a combination of both, demonstrating their social concern and sensitivity in a country that has experienced numerous socio-political and national upheavals and wars since 1830.
