The Garden as Place and Idea
The garden, as a space of pleasure and bliss, is not just a natural landscape but also a cultural and philosophical creation that reflects the perceptions of each era regarding the relationship between humans and nature. From the lost paradise of ancient myths to modern and industrial gardens, from monastic enclosed landscapes to the landscape gardens of the Renaissance, the concept of the garden transforms alongside humanity.
The Poetics of the Garden is not merely a historical record. The author traverses philosophical and theological views, pictorial representation, the treatise of gardening, and the literary depiction of the garden, highlighting it as a place of memory, allegory, reflection, and aesthetic experience.
“The garden is seemingly static, located in a predetermined space, with its own borders. However, like poetry, it escapes the materiality of its construction to lead into the invisible and the immaterial.”
A Book on the History and Philosophy of the Garden
From the archaeology of the garden and the notion of the enclosed space to its relationship with theology, poetry, and the modern city, Giannis Paraskeyopoulos's book covers a wide range of theoretical and artistic approaches.
His narrative wanders through garden traditions of Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East, while examining the transformation of the garden from a private refuge to a public space, from an ephemeral creation to a timeless symbol.
Reviews
“An original essay that boldly and sensitively touches upon an art that condenses an entire civilization. An excellent book that reveals the most palpable metaphysical dimension that lives and breathes beside us.” — Dimitris Athanitis
“It does not matter whether Giannis Paraskeyopoulos writes from a small or great love for gardens, nor whether he holds a diploma in horticulture or cannot distinguish between okra and hibiscus. What matters is that his book is primarily an unmatched guide-panorama of how a book is built regardless of genre and a mentorship alongside a creator who holds (and generously passes on) a fertile seed-universe.” — Giordani Papadopoulos
“Original idea and excellent development. The range of sources the author utilizes is impressive.” — Kostas Koutsourelis
“This is a work of memory... Against modern brutality, the book presents the enraged innocence, where the vision of the Greeks unites with the memory of the scents of Damascus and the incense of Yemen.” — Abdulatif ibn Zahir
Excerpt from the Book
“The garden teaches a way of existence. Or rather better, it is itself a way. The tropicality of the garden is the opening of culture to nature. It teaches the coexistence of elements and living beings within a framework where the vertical relationship meets the horizontal. [...] The garden transforms into a labyrinth and becomes an allegory of life. Elsewhere, the garden becomes a place of dwelling or a promise of an afterlife.”
