Iphigenia in Tauris by Goethe is a new adaptation of the eponymous ancient tragedy by Euripides, considered one of his most important works and one of the greatest masterpieces of German literature. Goethe wrote the first version of his drama in six weeks, in prose, and it was performed for the first time on April 6, 1779. He rewrote it in 1781, again in prose, and finally in 1786 it was written in verse this time.
The plot of the work generally follows that of the drama by Euripides. Iphigenia, after her rescue in Aulis, has been on the shores of Tauris for about fifteen years, in Scythia, where she serves Artemis, while being unaware of the fate of her family. On this shore, Orestes and Pylades arrive, sent by Apollo, seeking atonement and healing for Orestes from the madness inflicted upon him by the Furies as punishment for killing his mother. The two heroes are captured and Iphigenia is ordered by Thoas, the king of the land, to offer them as a sacrifice to the goddess. After the recognition of the two brothers and a failed escape attempt, the protagonist of the work ultimately convinces Thoas to allow them to leave peacefully from his land and return to Greece.
Chatzopoulos translated the work in 1910. After the second revised edition (1916), two more followed within a few years, in 1920 and 1927.
