It allows you to use longer exposure times to capture motion, such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars, and wider apertures for a shallower depth of field and to separate the subject from the background.

It can also be used to reduce the effective ISO of high-sensitivity film, as well as with cinema and video cameras with a fixed shutter speed, for shooting in bright settings such as snow or sand. The ND4 factor corresponds to a 2-stop reduction in exposure and reduces ISO to one quarter.
