Description

After Schumann's first, apparently unsuccessful attempt to compose a "Sonata" - only the first movement was published under the title "Allegro in B minor" - he tried again in 1833. It is known that this sonata was composed while he was in close contact with Clara Wieck, who was only thirteen years old at the time. Individual motifs from this can later be found in Clara's work, but similarly, individual forms can be found in the sonata that refer to Clara's "Pièces caractéristiques", Op. 5. Furthermore, Schumann used a nearly literal adaptation of his song "For Anna" for the second movement. We have included this in the appendix of our edition, thus showing the roots of this composition.
