Using the correct cuff is an absolutely necessary condition for an accurate measurement.

The correct cuff is the one that has the appropriate diameter from the manufacturer to match the diameter of the arm of the person using it. Blood pressure monitors are designed to offer accurate measurements when the correct cuff is used.

• If the diameter of the arm is larger than the diameter covered by the cuff, then we have the "small cuff effect." The device readings will be higher than the actual ones.
• If the diameter of the arm is smaller than the diameter covered by the cuff, then we have the "large cuff effect." The device readings will be lower than the actual ones.

To correctly measure your blood pressure, you should place the cuff (air chamber) of the blood pressure monitor on the left or right arm, approximately at heart level, slightly above the elbow. The stethoscope should be placed over the artery located on the inner side of the arm joint.

Automatic electronic blood pressure monitors are easy to use and therefore widely used as they have satisfactory accuracy in their measurements. They are particularly recommended if you have hearing or vision problems and there is no one at home to help you measure your blood pressure.

Blood pressure should be taken after at least 5-10 minutes of rest and calm. Also, in the previous hour, you should not have eaten, smoked, or been very tired. Allow one to two hours to pass after your exercise before measuring your blood pressure. The environment should be quiet and pleasant in terms of temperature.
