When Hitler announced that the outcome of the war in Europe would be "the complete extermination of the Jews," he did so in 1942, not only publicly but also in front of a huge crowd in Berlin. The Allies heard it, but, astonishingly, did not notice it. In 1944, Allied reconnaissance, searching for industrial targets in the area, repeatedly photographed Auschwitz. The images, apparently neglected by the Allies, were routinely filed in government archives and were not examined until 1979. The first reports of the horrors of the death camps reached the West in 1944 through two escapees from Auschwitz. Their testimonies, as well as those of subsequent escapees, were either ignored or dismissed. Despite the fact that, that same year, Churchill had ordered feasibility studies for air raids on Auschwitz, the RAF not only did nothing but ultimately handed over the responsibility to the Americans, who also did nothing. This book explains the reasons why.
