Description & Specifications

Why isn't wood weaker than it is? Why isn't steel stronger? Why does glass sometimes break and sometimes bend like a spring? Why do ships break in two? What is a liquid and is the sticky substance one of them? All these questions concern the nature of materials. They are vital for engineers but also interesting as scientific problems. During the 250 years up to the 1920s and 1930s, they were mainly answered by observing how materials behave in practice. However, materials continued to do things that they "shouldn't" do. Only in the last 40 years have these questions begun to be answered through a new approach. Material scientists have begun to analyze more deeply the composition of materials. They have discovered many surprises. Using both SI and imperial units, Professor Gordon's reference to materials science is a demonstration of some of the strange and entertaining ways in which scientists isolate and solve problems.
