When you light it for the first time, let it burn without placing a pot on top... The paint with which the stove is coated will burn off and will turn white when it cools down... scrub it with wire and everything will be fine... it doesn't rust because it's made of cast iron... I keep mine outside and it doesn't get affected at all...
