Description

What is climate change? How do we know it's anthropogenic? Are wind turbines good or bad? How can the energy transition be achieved? Should we reduce air travel? Should we all become activists? And, ultimately, what can we do? These are some of the 50 questions highlighted by journalist Thodoris Georgakopoulos when he asked his readers to pose their basic queries about the climate crisis.

He then sought to find the answers. The book you are holding is the result of this quest. A record of what we know, what we don't know, what is happening, and what we believe will happen in the greatest challenge humanity faces. In simple words, without hysteria and exaggerations.

It's worth reading because...

  • Offers understanding of the local impacts of climate change, clearly presenting how phenomena such as increased temperatures and extreme weather conditions affect daily life in Greece.
  • Informs about the policies and strategies that have been implemented or proposed, providing a comprehensive view of the national effort to address the crisis.
  • Cultivates environmental awareness, encouraging the reader to take action — as a citizen, professional, or educator — and actively contribute to sustainability.
  • Based on scientific documentation, drawing information from research and studies, to offer a reliable and serious approach to the issue of climate change in the Greek context.

Ideal reading for:

  • Politicians and policymakers: For the development and implementation of strategies addressing climate challenges.
  • Educators and students: As an educational tool for understanding the local impacts of climate change.
  • Environmental professionals: To enhance their knowledge of the Greek specificities of the climate crisis.
  • Active citizens and activists: Who seek to be informed and participate in actions to address climate change

Read an excerpt

“In July 2023, Greece experienced a heatwave that lasted 15 days in some areas. It was the longest on record in the country at that time. The phenomenon was so intense that it was given a name: the ‘Kleon’ heatwave. […] That July, in general, was the hottest ever recorded in 160 years of recorded data for Greece. Not only the hottest July – the hottest month.”
“And then came August. The largest forest fire ever recorded in Greece's history started on August 19 and burned nearly 1 million acres of forest in Evros. […] Nearly 900,000 acres of agricultural land were flooded in Thessaly and Magnesia, and 17 people lost their lives in the disaster.”
“What does climate change look like? More or less, like this: with longer, more intense heatwaves than before; with larger forest fires […] These are the simplest and most easily understood consequences of climate change, the ones we all see and experience in Greece in recent years. And we will experience them, without a doubt, in the future.”

Well-written, understandable, and above all, with the reliability that the author inspires through his research for the collection and presentation of the bibliography.

Nice as a gift since the topic is always mainstream and concerns all of us who inhabit planet Earth,
