Ernst Ludwig Kirchner considered the image and the frame as a unity. Despite Kirchner's intention for them to belong together, over the years some works have been separated from their original frames. In this edition, they are reconnected in a remarkable exhibition, allowing us to rediscover a chapter of modernization that has often been overlooked.
Even as a member of the "Brücke," Kirchner designed simple wooden frames for his works. Later in Davos, these were complemented with more complex frame profiles with steps and rounded, notched, and baroque elements. This volume is dedicated to the frames and their history in detail and shows for the first time with internationally renowned loans the evolution of the art of frames from the early to the late work of the famous expressionist artist.
