The Sermon is a complete expression of oral culture. It indeed forms worshiping communities and does so because it is not merely or mainly a catechetical, teaching act; it does not solely provide knowledge of what the faithful ought to know, but is an integral part of Divine Worship. Therefore, it is an event that cannot be substituted by any written text.

Sermon and Sacrifice are the two fundamental components of the two-thousand-year Christian worship practice. The dominant common medium employed is speech, and moreover, in both cases, the goal is the participation of the faithful in the worship act and, through it, in the teaching and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The unity of these two aspects is unbreakable. Therefore, one coexists with the other, influencing each other bidirectionally over time.

Up to now, the Sermon has not received systematic attention from contemporary Linguistics. Similarly, the language of Worship and its relationship with it has been studied very little. This work brings to the forefront the Modern Greek Sermon from 1990 onwards, distinguishing it as a textual type using the tools of modern linguistic science among other textual types of Modern Greek discourse, and it may serve as a small impetus for further study both from Philology and Theology perspectives.
