The Menderes government, pressured by Turkish public opinion that had been inflamed by articles in the Turkish press, hardened its stance by openly claiming Cyprus. Amid a climate of intense national frenzy and fanaticism, the Tripartite Conference in London regarding the Cyprus issue began on August 29, 1955, and ended on September 7.
The day before, a pogrom had started by the Turkish mob against the Greek minority in Istanbul.
“By the five-hundredth anniversary of the Fall, Istanbul should have not a single Greek resident," from a secret report by the Republican People's Party of Turkey in 1946.
The aim of this work is to demonstrate that the pogrom of the Turkish mob against the Greek minority in Istanbul was indeed the result of Turkey's broader minority policy towards the minorities living in the country, prior to the establishment of the new Turkish state (1923), and at the same time, it served the goals of the Turkish government concerning the Cyprus issue during this historical phase.
The events of 1955 were planned and organized with the aim of enabling Turkey to gain advantages in the negotiations during the Tripartite Conference in London regarding Cyprus.
