How is it possible for two or more distinct things to share a common element? The fact that countless entities or objects, completely distinct from each other, share some common characteristics or properties means that these objects are carriers of elements whose uniqueness has somehow been diffused into the multiplicity. The concept of humanity is unique, yet it can also be distributed among the infinite number of humans while remaining the same and identical. Universals are such concepts that find application in infinite realizations, connecting the particulars in this peculiar way.
This reflection led to the debate over whether universals are equally real as particulars, considering that universals arise from the intellect, while particulars are observational entities. The result was the creation of two major philosophical movements: realism, which supports the independent reality of universals, and nominalism, which rejects them. In this confrontation, the central figures were Scotus, a supporter of formal objectivity and advocate of concepts, and Ockham, critical of the role of the intellect.
