Like Shakespeare, like Quevedo, like Goethe,

Abundant tears filled Gabriel's eyes. He had never felt this way about any woman, but he knew that such a feeling must be love. Even more tears gathered in his eyes, and in the dim light, he imagined that he had seen the figure of a young man standing under a dripping tree. Other figures were nearby. His soul had approached that area where the countless crowds of the dead reside. He was aware, but he could not grasp their erratic and trembling existence. His very identity was fading within a gray, ghostly world. The solid world that these dead had once shaped and in which they had lived was now fading and dissolving.

Lily, the caretaker’s daughter, was literally worn out on her feet. As soon as she had shown a gentleman into the little office behind the ground floor desk and helped him take off his coat, the asthmatic bell of the door rang again, and she had to run back down the bare hallway to open the door for another guest. Fortunately, she didn’t have to attend to the ladies as well. But Miss Kate and Miss Julia had foreseen this and had turned the upstairs bathroom into a boudoir. Miss Kate and Miss Julia were there, gossiping and laughing and moving about, going now and then to the landing, looking over the banister and asking Lily who had arrived. The annual dance of the Misses Morkan had always been a very important event. Everyone who knew them came: family members, old family friends, members of Julia’s choir, any of Kate’s pupils who were old enough, even some of Mary Jane’s pupils. And this dance was always a success.
