The operation of the watering balls is pure physics. Air-filled gaps appear in the dry substrate. Air bubbles from the soil pass through the neck into the ball and, being lighter than water, rise to the top. Thus, the water is pushed from the ball and waters the substrate, where the empty air zones disappear. Another dose of water will be released when the soil dries again.
