In "Danny Coughlin's Nightmare," an unprecedented metaphysical flash overturns dozens of lives, and most disastrously, Danny's own. In "Rattlesnakes," the sequel to the iconic Cujo, a widower still deep in mourning travels to Florida seeking temporary relief, but what he finds is an unexpected inheritance—with heavy obligations. In the short story "Those Who Dream," a taciturn Vietnam veteran responds to a job ad and learns that some corners of the universe are better left unexplored. The story "The Answer Man" poses the question of whether knowing the future is good or bad, and reminds us that a life marked by unbearable tragedy can still have meaning.
King's ability to surprise, amaze, and at the same time instill terror and offer comfort remains unsurpassed. Each of these stories hides anxieties, joys, and mysteries, and all seem iconic. Do you like deep darkness? Here it is, then.

“So you like deep darkness? Great, me too,” writes Stephen King in the foreword to this new wonderful collection of twelve short stories that delve into the dark side of life – metaphorically and literally. For half a century, King has been a leader in the genre, and these stories, which explore fate, mortality, luck, and life—where anything can happen—are as rich and captivating as his novels, filled with meaning and delightful to read. King writes with the goal of feeling "the euphoria of leaving behind the everyday," and in this book, readers will feel that euphoria as well, again and again.
The story “Two Talented Bastards” explores the long-hidden secret of how these two men acquired their talents. In “Danny Coughlin’s Nightmare,” an unprecedented supernatural flash drastically alters dozens of lives, and most destructively, Danny's. In the story “Those Who See Dreams,” a taciturn Vietnam veteran responds to a job ad and learns that some corners of the universe are best left unexplored. The story “The Answer Man” poses the question of whether knowing the future is good or bad and reminds us that a life marked by unbearable tragedy can still hold meaning.

“My father – my famous father – died in 2023 at ninety. Two years earlier, he received an email from an independent journalist, Ruth Crawford, asking to interview him. I read it to him, as I did with all his personal and professional correspondence, because by then he had abandoned all electronic gadgets.”
“They asked Dad to speak at his funeral. I thought he wouldn’t do it – his refusal to expose himself to the public eye was absolute – but he accepted. He didn’t step onto the podium but simply stood up where he was sitting, leaning on his cane. He was always a good speaker, something that didn’t change with age.”
“Just two provincials with a provincial life. No violins. Until suddenly the whole orchestra played.”
