Description

The renowned Simon Singh is back with an unexpectedly provocative book. Only this magician of PopSci bestsellers could reveal the intoxicating height of an incredible mathematical "conspiracy." The writers of The Simpsons seem wildly "hooked" on numbers. They are mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists, and anything else you can think of. Moreover, they have a talent for writing, imagination, inspiration, and incredible, spontaneous humor.

They "abandoned" their science, succumbing to the charms of Hollywood, yet they never hid their secret love for mathematics. Singh spoke with the writers, "interviewed" them, and saw their goal: Through the hilarious jokes in each episode of the series, mathematical "gems" are planted in the subconscious of the viewers. Hidden in the quotes from The Simpsons are the first of Mersenne, Fermat's last theorem, infinity, pi, Ramanujan, Hilbert, Gauss, Turing, topology, chaos theory, game theory...

The secret mathematics of these beloved cartoons could form a Curriculum for a mathematics department! As a result: The new generation is growing up in a pop culture of mathematics, loves this science, and learns to think. A hit with mathematical precision!

... A mouse enters a cinema, settles into a seat in the middle rows, and prepares to enjoy the movie. The lights dim, the movie starts; just when the mouse begins to get comfortable, an elephant walks into the cinema and settles into the seat in front of the mouse. The mouse, annoyed, gets up and sits in the empty seat in front of the elephant. Once comfortably settled, it turns its head and squeaks smugly: "And now, do you see what it’s like to have someone sit in front of you?"...

... the mathematical mind does better at writing very silly jokes because logic is at the heart of mathematics. The more you think about logic, the more entertaining its distortion and deformation become. The logical mind finds the illogical humorous...
