When suddenly, in the small town of Martinville, a mysterious tiny public library (guarded by a large orange cat) appears out of nowhere one night, eleven-year-old Evan picks two books from its shelves, clearly showing the signs of time, without a moment's suspicion that they are going to change his life forever.

Very soon, Evan and his best friend, Rafe, discover a link between one of the old books and a distant event that all the adults stubbornly remain silent about. The two boys start asking questions, the answers to which will not only mark their own future but also that of the town itself.
