The first complete monograph on the provocative work of influential Italian designer, architect, and critic Alessandro Mendini. Born in Milan in 1931, Alessandro Mendini created vibrant, innovative, and eccentric works that exist in a uniquely aesthetic universe. He was at the center of the Italian Radical movement in the 1960s and 1970s and later in the realm of Postmodernism, promoting a sensitive and intellectual approach to design. He was also the editor of the magazine Domus in the early 1980s and collaborated with brands such as Alessi, Swarovski, and Hermès. Along with his contemporaries Ettore Sottsass and Gaetano Pesce, Mendini helped redefine the concept of Italian design and architecture.
This comprehensive monographic work – the first for the complete portfolio of Mendini – includes a wealth of unpublished documents and images. Written by critic Stefano Casciani, who worked with Mendini for many years, the book offers a uniquely personal narrative illustrated with photographs, clippings, and many eccentric and playful sketches by Mendini. It is presented in a dynamic packaging inspired by Mendini's characteristic aesthetic, with pink fabric covering the spine and featuring one of his iconic surfaces, a sketch of the famous Proost chair on the back, and pages with cuts and laminated chapters with wavy edges.
