One afternoon, in late November, Saleh Omar arrives at Gatwick Airport from Zanzibar, a distant island in the Indian Ocean. He carries with him a small bag where he keeps his most precious possession; a mahogany box containing incense. He was once the owner of a furniture shop, had a home, was a husband and father. Now, exiled from paradise, he seeks asylum in a foreign country; silence is his only protection.

Meanwhile, Latif Mahmoud, a man closely connected to Saleh's past, lives alone in his apartment in London. When Saleh and Latif meet in an English seaside town, a story begins to unfold. A story of love and betrayal, seduction and possession, and at the same time the story of a people desperately trying to find stability in the whirlwind of the era.
