Description

The second revised edition of the book by Asterios Pantokrator includes twelve additional stories of individuals whose paths set them apart from most, as their work significantly contributed to the field of science. Some stories pertain to scientists who are not well-known to the general public, and this, as the author mentions in his introduction, was one of the goals of the book. Stories of notable Greek scientists, who are usually overlooked, have also been included.

In education, students are taught scientific knowledge and theory directly. However, what remains outside of the respective curricula are the personal stories of these individuals and the way, the research process that led them to innovative conclusions, often "contrary" to established scientific theories, something that reveals that the acquisition of knowledge cannot exist without an open mindset.

"...Arno Penzias had completed his doctoral thesis in 1961 and was temporarily hired as a radio astronomer at Bell Laboratories. Another radio astronomer, Robert Wilson, arrived at Bell Laboratories in 1963. The two researchers thought about using the "useless" antenna for astronomical observations and transformed it into a radio telescope. They pointed the antenna towards space in search of signals from the universe. Working at a wavelength of seven centimeters, they detected a weak, persistent, unknown signal that was reaching the antenna from all directions with the same intensity.

Initially, they assumed it might be coming from the sun, from the noise of New York, or from the antenna itself. One day, while trying to locate the source of the signal, they discovered that the "dish" of the antenna was covered in droppings from the pigeons that lived there. To eliminate the possibility of the signal coming from the antenna, they cleaned the droppings and exterminated the pigeons. Nevertheless, the signal remained. After arduous efforts and ruling out all the above sources, they concluded that the signal was coming from the universe... "
