Description

After the great success of Surrounded by Idiots, comes the new bestseller by Thomas Erikson.

Studies show that two people who have never met before will tell three lies within the first five minutes of their meeting. Amazing!

But why? Why do we choose to lie even when we know it's wrong? To protect the people we love? To present the most flattering image of ourselves? To gain instant praise? Or are there much darker reasons for why we lie?

In Surrounded by Liars, human behavior expert Thomas Erikson reveals the psychological reasons we lie and the impact that lying has on our relationships. With the help of the behavioral model that became famous in Surrounded by Idiots, discover how to spot liars in your life and put an end to their deception once and for all!

Read an excerpt

«Many people enjoy telling little lies. It's a way to add spice to everyday life, and it's also thrilling to get away with it without consequences. Big lie, small lie, no one caught me, ha ha, I won. Managing to convince someone to believe something untrue can be a great temptation, especially if you spend a lot of time in morally gray areas. In today's society, the thrill one feels when not telling the truth is greater than ever. After all, you have almost immediate feedback. Mythomania (lying disorder), manipulation, and deception have become common elements of our interactions. Whether it's fabricating sensational news to attract attention, distorting and misinterpreting statistics to support one's personal beliefs, or the repeated use of white lies to avoid embarrassment, the dividing line between truth and deception is becoming increasingly blurred.

No. There are no irrefutable statistics proving that everyone lies. It would be a big lie to claim otherwise. However, it remains a reasonable assumption based on my personal experience with people. And honestly, I don't think you would disagree. We know it's true. Everyone tells a lie now and then. This is how a normal flow is maintained.

As harsh as this truth may sound, lying is instinctive to some extent. If you're thinking: "No, I don't lie!", I would advise you to read the above examples once more. And then accept the truth. Of course, the reasons we have for lying differ from person to person and from situation to situation. We may resort to lying to defend ourselves, avoid confrontation, impress someone, keep a secret, or gain social acceptance by presenting ourselves in a more flattering light.»

I expected it to be similar to his first book "Surrounded by Idiots". Unfortunately, it was not. It didn't keep my interest. It was repetitive in some chapters and that tired me. I felt several times that he was writing just for the sake of writing. A lot of analysis without reason.
