A edition of Ovid's classic texts, "Metamorphoses," has been planned for nearly a century, but previous attempts by D. A. Slater and Franco Munari were not completed, primarily due to the size and complexity of the manuscript tradition. R. J. Tarrant has finally created a text with a broader manuscript base than any previous modern edition. Early fragments and older manuscripts have been freshly collated, while 12th-century manuscripts have been used in their entirety for the first time. As a result, many potential authentic readings previously attributed to later sources or even to contemporary scholars can now be traced in the core line of the medieval tradition. In the critical process of the text, Tarrant has adopted more and more generous hypotheses than his immediate predecessors, including several published corrections. Regarding the interpolated verses, Tarrant has taken a more skeptical approach to the transmitted text compared to the editors of the last century. Some lines he has titled had been contested by previous editors, but proposals for deletions are new. In his commentary, the editor often notes that a rejected variant or hypothesis offers a compelling alternative to the printed text, focusing on the many places where the authentic reading remains open to challenge. This edition offers a wealth of new information and ideas and will be indispensable for any future study of Ovid's masterpiece.
