I walk through the hospital door knowing it will be the last time. In the elevator, I press the number three and watch it light up for the last time. The doors open on the third floor. I smile at the nurse on duty and see, for the last time, the pity on her face. I pass by the supply room, the chapel, and the staff lounge, all for the last time. I keep walking down the corridor and gently knock on his door, my eyes looking straight ahead and my heart full of courage. I wait to hear Adam tell me to come in for the last time. “Come in.” His voice reveals that he still has hope, and I don’t understand how that’s possible. He is in his bed, lying on his back. When he sees me, he comforts me with a smile and lifts the blanket, inviting me to get under it. The bed rail is already down, so I lie down next to him, put my hand on his chest, and entwine our legs.
I bury my face in his neck, searching for his warmth, but I can’t find it. Today he is cold. He shifts until we are in our usual position, with his left arm under me and his right arm over me, pressed close to him. It takes him a little longer than usual to get comfortable, and I notice his breathing becoming heavier with each small movement. I try not to pay attention to these things, but it’s difficult. I sense his growing weakness, his skin becoming slightly paler, his voice more fragile. Every day, during my visit, I watch him drift further and further away from me and there is nothing I can do about it. No one can do anything except watch it happen.
