Read the Beginning

“WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENED TO YOUR MOTHER?”

The word sounded strange in Belle's ears when he pronounced it. Mother. Unnatural. But not as unnatural as mom. That word was pressed between her lips, distorted and angry, like a swollen slug that would finally manage to break free and fall with a splat on the floor to draw everyone's attention. Because that's what happened every time.

The word mom had no place in her mouth and Belle didn't say it unless it was absolutely necessary. At least mother was somewhat colder, creating a distance.

“All right, take your time,” said Ramsey, pronouncing the vowels sharply and clearly. Belle looked at Ramsey across from her, avoiding the camera. Worry lines intersected on his black skin, gathering around his eyes as he steadily looked at Belle.

"All right, take your time," said Ramsey, pronouncing the vowels sharply and clearly. Belle looked at Ramsey across from her, avoiding the camera. Worry lines crossed over his dark skin, gathering around his eyes as he stared steadily at Belle, because she was already procrastinating excessively, more than she had during the meetings to prepare for the interviews in recent days. He raised his hand and scratched his temple, right where his dark curly hair was greying above his ears. Ramsey Lee: film producer and director from South London – he lived on the other side of the world, and yet here he was in Gorham, New Hampshire, sitting across from her. Ramsey cleared his throat. "Uh..." Belle started to say, but choked on that slug. "I don't know." Ramsey leaned back, his chair creaked, and Belle realized from the disappointment that flashed briefly across his face that she wasn't doing well. She was doing worse than before. It must have been the camera's fault. The camera changed things, because it created something permanent. One day, thousands of people would watch the documentary and the only thing separating them from her would be the glass of the television.

A book that even I myself did not expect to read, but in the end I loved it! A very powerful read that has it all: do you want mystery? Tension? Family dramas? Do you want something that keeps you in suspense until the last page without tiring you? Well, here it is!

  • In general, I don't bother to comment on books but here I will make an exception. So painfully silly, I feel like I'm making an effort to endure the author's stupidity... Honestly, this has never happened to me before!

A very powerful read that has it all: do you want mystery? Tension? Family dramas? Do you want something that keeps you in suspense until the last page without tiring you? Well, here it is!

Initially, it was my first encounter with Holly Jackson and I can say that I really liked her writing and we clicked.

So, a few words about the plot:
Rachel, one day when she goes to the mall with her 2-year-old daughter, mysteriously disappears. Everyone considers her dead until... she returns 16 years later, unscathed, as if she was never lost! And, in fact, she appears at the time a documentary about her case is being filmed. From then on, chaos begins!

Although the book beautifully builds the atmosphere and you get into the minds of the characters, I personally figured out early on what had happened—maybe because I have a bit of an obsession with true crime documentaries, or maybe it was a little too obvious. ?‍♀️

Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable book, where it didn't just matter who did it, but also how a disappearance can tear a family apart.

The story follows young Belle, who witnessed the disappearance of her mother, Rachel Price, 16 years ago, but remembers nothing since. When the case is reopened for a documentary, Rachel suddenly reappears, raising doubts about the truth behind her disappearance, and Belle is there to discover who is ultimately lying and why.

Her books never disappoint me! This particular one might even be my favorite of hers. The characters were all so well-crafted, each with a mystery to hide, making the story even more exciting.

The plot was full, and although the book was standalone, it left absolutely no gaps. I might have preferred a less rushed ending, but it didn’t spoil the book for me overall. It’s a book I would easily read again, and I highly recommend it.

I also suggest you definitely read some of her other books, they are all equally unique and will surely keep you in suspense! In fact, her series "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder" has also been made into a TV series by Netflix.

The Reappearance of Rachel Price is a psychological thriller with a strong emotional foundation and a plot that masterfully intertwines secrets, family relationships, and the boundaries between truth and lies. Sixteen years after her mother's disappearance, Belle is called to participate in a documentary that revives the case. Through this process, everything changes – because Rachel suddenly returns. But is she who she says she is? And, most importantly, why now?

I really enjoyed the book. It starts with Belle being at the center of the filming, visibly awkward, and this awkwardness immediately transfers to the reader. Her hesitation towards her mother – a woman she thought was dead who suddenly returns as if no time has passed – seemed completely logical to me. The psychological tension is constant and gradually escalates, without becoming tiresome. Although the book has quite a few pages, I didn’t feel at all that it dragged. On the contrary, it kept me engaged until the end, with ever-increasing suspense.

I had suspected some things, but the climax surprised me. The ending was truly unexpected – it left me with my mouth agape and made me want to go back and reread certain points. The characters are well-developed, and the fact that a documentary is woven into the narrative adds a contemporary, realistic element that works very well.

If you love psychological thrillers with depth, mystery, and dynamic maternal relationships, this book definitely deserves a spot on your list.
