Description

Master storyteller and internationally bestselling author Christopher Paolini returns to the World of Eragon in this stunning epic fantasy set a year after the events of the Inheritance Cycle. The world is no longer safe for the Dragon Rider Murtagh and his dragon, Thorn. An evil king has been toppled, and they are left to face the consequences of the reluctant role they played in his reign of terror.

Now they are hated and alone, exiled to the outskirts of society. Throughout the land, hushed voices whisper of brittle ground and a faint scent of brimstone in the air - and Murtagh senses that something wicked lurks in the shadows of Alagaësia. So begins an epic journey into lands both familiar and untraveled, where Murtagh and Thorn must use every weapon in their arsenal, from brains to brawn, to find and outwit a mysterious witch. A witch who is much more than she seems.

In this gripping novel starring one of the most popular characters from Christopher Paolini's blockbuster Inheritance Cycle, a Dragon Rider must discover what he stands for in a world that has abandoned him. Murtagh is the perfect book to enter the World of Eragon for the first time . . . or to joyfully return.

Christopher Paolini's Murtagh was an unexpectedly moving and mature journey into the world we loved. It was a book that managed to stand on its own, while at the same time I felt like I was coming home. Murtagh is not just a story about the continuation of a secondary character. It is an exploration of guilt, identity, and yes, it has dragons, magic, and an epic atmosphere.

Murtagh was always one of the most interesting characters of the original cycle, with a complex morality and a constantly questioned place in the world. In this new book, set after the events of Inheritance, he tries to reconcile with his past, define his future, and find his place in a society that fears and rejects him. His relationship with his dragon is the emotional center of the book. Their chemistry is captivating and, in my opinion, one of the best depictions of a human-dragon bond in fantasy literature.

The plot is darker than one might expect, but it remains full of the epic aura that characterizes the author's fantasy world. There are new characters, a threat that develops slowly but subtly, and of course enough magic and lore to keep any fantasy fan excited. The pace is not breakneck, but I did not consider this a negative. It does not seek to impress with battles – though there are some – but to put us in the mind of a man whom everyone fears, but few understand.

Paolini's writing has matured noticeably. It is more lyrical, more contemplative, and has moved away from the more "heroic" narration of the previous books. Murtagh is addressed both to old fans of the Inheritance Cycle and to adult readers who appreciate a more psychological story. You don't need to have read the entire series to enjoy it, although it is certainly enriched by prior knowledge of the world.

If you love fantasy that doesn't just stay with adventure, but also seeks the soul of its heroes, then Murtagh absolutely deserves your attention.
