Through a multitude of testimonies, documents, and archival material, the author attempts to present the entire evolution of the Eptapyrgio, from its function as a fortress of Thessaloniki and later as a prison, from the period of Ottoman domination of the city until its closure in 1989.
As well as the grim picture of the penal system during the period before the Yedi Kule, when the White Tower and the Pasha's Konak, the current Administrative Building, were used as prisons.
In this specific book, we therefore observe the deplorable conditions that prevailed in the Eptapyrgio prison after it opened as a prison around 1896 and in all the subsequent years, with drug trafficking, rapes of inmates, and the brutal exploitation of prisoners by a power system to enrich a select few influential figures, including state officials. It also describes the sensational escapes from the hellhole, as well as the nightmare of executions, mainly of political prisoners, during the periods of Occupation and Civil War.
