Diktamos (diktamo) is a herb endemic to Crete with medicinal properties known since ancient times. Diktamos is also referred to as erontas, stathari, stamnochorto, stomatochorto, and stomachochorto. It grows in mountainous and steep limestone areas, on steep slopes of gorges and ravines, as well as on steep coastal cliffs.
The old pharmacopoeia used it for the preparation of theriac and mithridatic. Diktamos was known before the Middle Ages to Europeans as a medicinal plant. It is a tonic and stimulant for the digestive system, antispasmodic, astringent, healing, and soothing for stomach and intestinal pains.
It is also diuretic, cholagogue, emmenagogue, combats amoebas, alleviates headaches and toothaches. Beneficial in cases of nervous disorders, scurvy, and intermittent fevers.
How to Use:
- Pour a cup of boiling water over a teaspoon of dried herb.
- Cover and let it steep for 10 minutes.
- Strain and drink twice a day.
