Description

Nominated for the Skroutz Book Awards 2025.

Mallory Quinn has just come out of rehab when she gets a job as the babysitter for five-year-old Teddy. She is excited about her new job. She has her own room, as well as the stability she has longed for. She quickly bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who always carries his sketchpad and pencil with him. His drawings are typical: little trees, bunnies, flowers.

But one day, he draws something different: a man in a forest dragging the lifeless body of a woman. Teddy’s creations become increasingly dark, and his stick figures quickly turn into realistic sketches that far exceed the abilities of a five-year-old. Mallory begins to wonder if these are glimpses of an unsolved murder, possibly sent by a supernatural force.

Although she realizes how irrational this idea seems, Mallory tries to decipher the drawings and save Teddy before it’s too late. “Every night we spend time together,” Teddy says. “She sleeps under my bed and I hear her singing.”

"I'm sure your name is Teddy."

The boy smiles shyly.

"I'm Mallory Quinn. He's inside–"

She turns around and runs up the stairs to the second floor and disappears from my sight.

"Teddy?"

I don't know what to do. In front of me is a small hall and a corridor leading to the kitchen. I see a dining room (on the left) and a living room (on the right) and beautiful pine wood parquet floors (everywhere). The fresh and cool smell of central air conditioning hits me – with a hint of green soap, as if someone had just scrubbed the floors well. All the furniture looks modern and brand new to me, as if they had just been taken from a Crate and Barrel showroom. I ring the doorbell, but it makes no sound. I ring it three more times – nothing.

"Is anyone here?"

I felt like I was watching a classic American supernatural thriller movie. I found it rather exaggerated in some parts. I think there was just a lot of hype, that's all.

In the book "Hidden Pictures" we follow Mallory Quinn, who has just come out of rehab, and takes on the care of little Teddy Maxwell. A sweet five-year-old boy who seems to like her a lot, having a special love for drawing. His drawings look beautiful, trees, faces, landscapes... but somewhere along the way, a female figure is added to his drawings, somewhat frightening, which particularly troubles Mallory.

An emotional roller-coaster, this book, which I finished in one breath. The idea with the drawings that harmonize with the plot of the book is amazing. Beyond being a psychological thriller, it also has supernatural elements which I really liked. Extra points for the ending, which I definitely did not see coming. I won't hide from you, though, that I found two or three sloppy parts, but they didn't spoil my reading experience at all.
