This book, from its title, provokes reflection as it is paradoxical that there were Muslims in Mount Athos, specifically during the 19th century. However, as we will demonstrate, it was by no means an occasional and isolated phenomenon.
Through the life and martyrdom of the neo-martyr Constantine from the Saracens, issues such as his Muslim identity, his presence in Mount Athos during the preparation period of the Greek revolution, and the reflections surrounding the phenomenon of neo-martyrs will be examined, along with the significant role of the anointer, especially Gregory V, in the conversion and baptism of Constantine.
A series of issues will also be examined as we focus on specific information provided by his synaxarion, which we must interpret in order to present a comprehensive picture of the historical context of the era in which his martyrdom took place.
