August 1938. The Italian archaeology professor Alessandro Filieri arrives in the area of ancient Demphida, in the mountainous region of Aetolia-Acarnania. August 1982. The crash of a private plane in the Aegean Sea, resulting in the death of a famous Spanish doctor, draws global attention to Greece. This strange accident is compounded by three murders: that of the Minister of Culture, a senior judge, and a wealthy American living in Kythira. Each murder is followed by a proclamation, where instead of a name, the author uses numbers as their signature.

The experienced detective Aris Kostis, who takes on the investigation of the case, is faced with a perplexing riddle. Trieste, Rome, Southern Italy, Thessaloniki, Syros, Delos, Patras, Agrinio, Kythira, New York. The heroes of Demphida travel far and wide to uncover the truth of the events and of themselves, balancing between duty and desire.
