The combination of technocratic appeals to expertise and populist appeals to the "people" has now become the central axis of political competition in parliamentary democracies.
This development is described and understood by the term technopopulism – a new political logic that overlays the traditional conflict between the right and the left.
Established parties, political movements, as well as other political actors adopt and adapt to this new logic, which further limits the quality of democracy and narrows the horizon of possibilities.
This book represents an innovative contribution to understanding the changes occurring in contemporary representative democracies. By analyzing and discussing a series of examples, mainly from the European political scene, technopopulism and its consequences are systematically explored, while at the same time possible alternative directions are examined beyond simplistic, balancing logics.
