Description

In the book The Legacy of Hellenism by Eleni Glykatzi-Ahrweiler, Thanasis Th. Niarchos compiles published texts, speeches, and interviews of the leading Greek Byzantinist, distillates of her significant journey through time and places. The volume is edited by Thanasis Th. Niarchos himself, with introductions by historian Maria Efthymiou and poet Ioulita Iliopoulou.

From the back cover of the book: "Let us reflect that in the struggle against Asia, which Greece has been undertaking since its inception, Christianity must immediately be added as a characteristic foundation of Europe, as we live it today. We must once again recognize the decisive role of the Greek spirit and especially the Greek language. Of the language of fame that was spoken, as Kavafis writes, as far as the Euphrates and Zagros. Therefore, we must once again highlight the Greek priority in establishing the spiritual-religious Europe, that is, in the practice of Christianity. The Christ-like life, the soteriological practice, is for Europe not only a unifying basis of the spirituality of its populations but also a source of inexhaustible artistic, primarily visual, aesthetic, inspiration, and creation." Eleni Glykatzi-Ahrweiler (excerpt from her speech titled "Hellenism and Europe" at the Goulandris-Horn Foundation, June 22, 1994).

"The texts of the present edition, profound and emotive, incisive and witty, multidimensional and substantial, clear and penetrating, explain why Ms. Ahrweiler has been able to win a place in the heart of the difficult people from whom she descends and whose coordinates she has studied for decades, focusing mainly on what unfolded during the nearly thousand years of Byzantine History." From the foreword by Maria Efthymiou.

"Because the commitment to the essential, in her own way, is manifested in Ahrweiler's discourse, a commitment to a human-centeredness that is both ancient Greek and Christian, a commitment to fundamental principles and values, a quality that we rarely invoke anymore of Hellenism! Not, of course, to conquer nations, but to regain our true selves, the one for whom the true homeland is the language and what the words encompass." From the foreword by Ioulita Iliopoulou.
