Description & Specifications

After Black Sand, the second book in the series featuring heroine Vanina Guarasi, which was described as a publishing phenomenon in Italy.

It is 4:30 in the morning. From their boat, journalist Sante Tamaro and his friend, doctor Manfredi Monterale, who have gone fishing, see a man struggling to drag a large suitcase and throw it onto the sea rocks. A few hours later, Deputy Police Chief Vanina Guarasi receives an anonymous phone call: a woman reports that she saw the murder of a girl in a seaside villa during the night. It soon becomes clear that the two events are connected, but the case proves to be very sensitive. Vanina will have to move very carefully among the powerful of Catania. And with the help of retired police officer Patane, with whom she now forms a steady duo, she must unravel a plot that holds surprises and deadly dangers until the last moment…

Another novel with the dynamism and beauty of Sicily, from the new great voice of Italian crime literature.

“Fishing with a torch has a specific technique. We turn on the light, keep quiet, stay as still as possible, and meanwhile have the nets ready. Sooner or later, even the most well-hidden fish come to the surface. And then they can no longer escape.” Vanina thought that this image perfectly described the case.

Genre: Detective novel
Atmosphere: Italian noir full of liveliness, with realistic dialogues, social references, and a constant sense of mystery.

In the book, you will encounter

  • An anonymous phone call that leads to a chilling discovery.

  • A dynamic heroine with a strong past and personal traumas.

  • Catania, Sicily, almost acts as a second protagonist.

Why we loved it

Scalia's style balances humor, suspense, and detective mystery with unique naturalness.

Vanina is a character with depth, weaknesses, and a personality that immediately wins you over.

The plot unfolds gradually, with a pace that keeps you alert, without exaggerations.

This book is for you if…

Are you looking for an atmospheric, cleverly written detective story set in an authentic Italian environment, with a heroine who breaks away from clichés?

"The old lantern finally decided to work and now it was swaying from its hook, illuminating a square meter of sea.

Sante Tamaro was at the stern, in a precarious position. With his head bowed, his nose buried in the bucket with the glass bottom, he occasionally looked to make sure the harpoon and net were close to him.

Manfredi Monterale looked indifferently at the fishing gear lying unused on the boat's deck. With his hands still on the oars, he sang lyrics by De André that spoke of a fisherman."

The old lantern finally decided to work and was now swinging from the hook, illuminating a square meter of sea. Sante Tamaro was at the stern, in an unstable position. With his head bowed, his nose buried in the bucket with the glass bottom, he occasionally looked up to make sure the harpoon and the net were close to him. Manfredi Montereale was looking indifferently at the fishing gear lying unused on the boat's deck. With his hands still on the oars, he was singing verses by De André about a fisherman. "Will you finally stop with that chant? You're scaring the fish away," shouted Sante and suddenly stood up. The boat rocked dangerously. Manfredi let go of the oars. "Oh, yeah? Is that why we haven't caught a single sardine in two hours?" he said sarcastically and grabbed the fallen thermos from under his seat. Sante made a gesture indicating it wasn't even worth responding to him.
