Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is one of the most iconic figures in 20th-century art, an exceptionally mysterious personality who not only changed the definition of art but also left behind a vast and extremely complex archive of his daily activities. The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné, the definitive record of the artist's paintings, sculptures, and drawings, covers approximately 15,000 works produced by Warhol between 1948 and 1987. It also includes an impressive variety of rare source materials, including excerpts from newspapers and advertising photographs of film stars who inspired Warhol's incredibly fascinating life and career.

The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonné was initiated in 1977 by Thomas Aman. Curators Georg Frey and Neil Printz began primary research in 1993 and were guided throughout the project by renowned curators and art historians Kenneth MacShane and Robert Rosenblum. Experts from the Andy Warhol Foundation personally reviewed the majority of Warhol's works and began a detailed review of his archive, which at the time of his death consisted of approximately 1,500 cardboard boxes, flat folders, and suitcases filled with source materials, memorabilia, correspondence, and promotional mailings.

The curators examined works in museum conservation facilities and discussed them with conservators, submitted works for review by the Andy Warhol Art Authentication Committee, and interviewed Warhol's collaborators and peers to compile a custom database of works unprecedented in Warhol research. All their findings are documented in this unprecedented work. Each entry in the catalogue includes the title of the work, the date, the medium, the dimensions, and the current holder, followed by a record of inscriptions, provenance, exhibitions, and bibliography. Related works are linked to general introductory texts that explore historical conditions, common themes, and studio practices. Supplemental images illustrate source materials that Warhol accessed for his works: articles and advertisements from newspapers, soup cans, and promotional photographs, as well as related sketches, works by other artists, and views from the studio and exhibitions. Volume 1 includes classic and extremely valuable works by Warhol, such as the Campbell Soup paintings, images of iconic figures like Marilyn, Liz, and Elvis, as well as early self-portraits.
