The biblical "Leather Tunics" have been symbolized by the Church Fathers and more recent interpreters as materiality, fleshy corporeality, irrationality, biologism, and deadness, but also as culture, arts, science, and politics. With these, God clothed the first humans immediately after their fall.
Both Nicholas Cabasilas and Panagiotis Nellas, each in his own time, theologically interpreted the dual nature of the Leather Tunics, providing corresponding ontological, anthropological, and cosmological extensions. Their goal was dialogue with their time, which they achieved not only through their writings but also through their everyday actions in the world.
Today, in the age of Artificial Intelligence, there is a need for a new modern interpretation of the Theology of the Leather Tunics, a theology of History, as we attempt here, in open dialogue with contemporary earthly realities and with ontological, anthropological, and cosmological extensions.
Ultimately, in every era – and even more so now – the question remains critical for us: Is it about whether God is absent or present within History and humanity, realistically and mysteriously?
