Description

Obesity is a pandemic. The global prevalence has tripled in the last thirty years. It is influenced by genetic, metabolic, environmental, and behavioral factors.

It is not merely the result of a caloric imbalance, but reflects the complex interaction between biological mechanisms and the modern obesogenic environment. Each time we lose weight, the secretion of numerous hormones that regulate weight changes, while at the same time the calories we expend also decrease.

Thus, our body resists weight loss with many mechanisms, complicating every effort. In a pathological genetic environment, a series of factors promote its development, requiring personalized treatment, as lifestyle interventions may not be sufficient to achieve medically significant and long-term weight loss.

But why is losing and maintaining weight so difficult?

In the book you will meet

  • The biological mechanisms that regulate body weight.
  • The impact of the environment on the development of obesity.
  • The method of diagnosis and the comorbidities of obesity.

Why We Loved It

Presents obesity as a complex disease, not merely as a result of lack of willpower. Explains why losing and maintaining weight is often difficult. Helps to dismantle the stigma surrounding obesity.

This book is for you if…

...you want to understand why obesity is a complex disease and which biological processes affect it. It is aimed at those interested in the scientific approach to the subject, written in a simple way.

Read an excerpt

«Obesity is a complex, multifactorial disease influenced by genetic, metabolic, environmental, and behavioral factors. Obesity is not merely the result of caloric imbalance, but reflects the complex interaction between biological mechanisms and the modern obesogenic environment. Every time we lose weight, the secretion of numerous hormones that regulate weight changes, while at the same time the calories we expend decrease.

Thus, our body opposes weight loss through many mechanisms, complicating every effort. The set point theory assumes that the human body has a genetically predetermined stable weight (set point or set range). Various physiological mechanisms maintain this set point stable and strongly resist any deviation.

This theory explains the high rate of weight regain (over 80%) after the cessation of any intervention (diet, exercise, medication, etc.).»
