‘One of the most important writers of the French Caribbean’ Guardian
The most recognizable and dazzling philosophical work of Édouard Glissant – which offers a new poetic perspective on the world.
‘We call forth the cry of our poetry. Our ships are open, and we sail them for all.’
In Poetics of Relation, Édouard Glissant transforms the Caribbean of his birth into a dynamic, multi-dimensional vision of a world in transformation. We find that relationship in all its manifestations – depositing, listening, connecting, and the parallel consciousness of self and environment – is the key to the revolution of mindsets and societies. Are we not rooted, but constantly in change? Do we have the right to difference, wherever we are.
Blending dreamlike prose with philosophical brilliance, this unique exploration of language, colonial past, slavery, and freedom narrates a Caribbean identity, as well as that of the entire world, where ‘the poetic of Relation feels, embraces, opens, gathers, scatters, continues, and transforms.’
