Description & Specifications

A true and sincere look at motherhood through the experience of the photographer and her friends. For a long time, motherhood was considered a taboo in the art world. When I think of the women I admired, they openly spoke about their career choices at the expense of family. Some may have had children, but they never shared their insecurities or sacrifices. The age limits for artist awards are typically 35 years old or younger. But once a woman turns 30, she is often considered "old" and her biological clock is "ticking." The years to choose between motherhood or success are few and conflict with the years when both can happen, but nothing is guaranteed. When I realized I was pregnant, I had no idea what awaited me. How messy and how authentic motherhood is compared to the images I had in my mind from movies, photographs, paintings by men. Back then, I was an emerging artist, traveling and participating in art shows and openings. Now I am a mother of two who works with borrowed time hoping that the years I lost in raising them can be written on my resume without guilt or shame. This ongoing work, which will always be a work in progress, is about becoming, understanding, and remembering. Trying not to forget all the things that seemed so important, and the moment you think you know them, a new challenge arises. How can something as universal as motherhood be so lonely? How is it that we all experience it and there are no answers to all these difficulties? What about our bodies, our hormones, our thoughts, our friends, our loves? Our careers, our homes, our dishes, our laundry, our sexual desires? What happened to our freedom, our showers, our sleeping hours? I love being a mother. I also loved being an artist.
