The Little Black Squid Looks for Colors – An adventure for the joy of uniqueness!

A little squid feels sad... because it doesn't have colors like its friends!

Once upon a time, there was a little black squid that was always very sad. Why? Because all its friends in the pool had wonderful colors, except for it. So, it embarks on a great quest to find its own colors. Will it succeed? And what will it ultimately discover about itself and the importance of being yourself on this colorful journey? A tender story that reminds us that the most important thing of all is to love who we are and not necessarily what we appear to be.

  • Theme: Self-esteem, Diversity, Self-acceptance, Friendship, Colors, Uniqueness
  • Style: Tender, simple, with an optimistic message of encouragement, ideal for young children.
  • Age: from 2 years old
  • Suitable for:

Very young children learning about colors and beginning to understand the value of each person's uniqueness. It is a book aimed at boosting children's self-confidence and teaching them that they are wonderful just as they are, with their own special characteristics. A sweet bedtime story or for a tender reading moment, which can lead to beautiful discussions about how we feel when we feel different.

    Why This Book Is Special:

    • Starring a lovable little black squid, it speaks with tenderness and simplicity about a very important topic: the acceptance of our differences and the beauty of being yourself.
    • The story helps children understand that the most important thing is not to look like others, but to love who we are.
    • Claire Georgelli, as an author and illustrator, creates a visually appealing, tender, and completely understandable world for young children, often using her favorite collage technique.
    • It is a book that encourages self-esteem, a positive self-image, and the joy of self-discovery from a very early age.
    • The story offers an excellent opportunity for discussion about emotions (sadness, joy, acceptance) and the importance of friendship.

Book with a soft cover and 32 pages, featuring the tender, distinctive, and colorful illustrations by Claire Georgelli.

Suggestions for Use by Parents or Educators:

    • Ideal for talking about the various colors and recognizing them, as well as emphasizing that black is also a wonderful color with its own beauty and value.
    • It can be used as a starting point to discuss diversity and how beautiful and important it is for each of us to be unique, like a distinct color in a colorful painting.
    • Helps cultivate empathy and acceptance of others just as they are, with their own "colors" and characteristics.

Inspired by the book, you can:

    • Discuss: Why was the little squid sad at first? What did it do to find colors? What did it ultimately discover about itself?
    • Ask the child: What is your favorite color? What makes you special and unique? Are all your friends the same as you, or do they have different characteristics that make them lovable?
    • Create: Draw the little squid with the colors it would like to have or as it is, and make a large painting with all your favorite colors and sea creatures.

    Read an excerpt:

"Once upon a time, there was a little black squid that was always sad. It never played with its friends in the pool, because everyone had colors except for it."
