With his Gospel, Tolstoy expresses his own view of Christianity, free from what he believes are later additions by a clergy that had little connection to the Teaching of Jesus.
Through the Gospel, the great Russian thinker initiates his own revolution at a time when darkness, totalitarianism, and the absolute devaluation of education prevailed. Tolstoy's personal revolution has no relation to or comparison with other revolutions, either previous or subsequent to his time.
His revolution, defined by his practical example, was characterized by non-violence and peaceful resistance to the State and Violence. He did not seek to change the world with weapons, but with gentle words, passive resistance, and goodness.
His love for Christ, as he understood him, led him to embrace the commandment to Love one another and to teach it with all his strength. His goal: the reformation of the Russian people and, by extension, the peoples of the world, their education, their inclusion in society, and their removal from marginalization, poverty, and neglect.
