Read an excerpt:

Ages pulled out my chair for me to sit, and I wondered if anyone else had ever done that for me. Then, he went across from me and settled into his chair, looking at the girl who was coming with the menus.

It was the first moment I allowed myself to observe this man more. Until then, he was the kind doctor who was treating my daughter. We glanced at the menu, and the truth was that the smells in the room had whetted my appetite. We placed our order, and before the girl left, he turned to me.

"I'll have a glass of white wine. Will you join me?" he said, and I nodded.

I looked around at the others enjoying their lunch. Soft piano music was playing from the speakers, just enough to acoustically dress the beautiful atmosphere.

"I think we can now speak informally," I said after a while.

"I agree," he replied, and looking at my phone, he asked, "Did Phoebe call?"

"Yes."

"Great, because I saw you were happy."

"Yes, sometimes a conversation is enough to completely change your mood."

"That's very true. And I must mention that, given the circumstances, you and your husband have handled the situation calmly."
For a few seconds, I had forgotten the serious problem our child had. I darkened slightly and sighed.

Loneliness… I can’t even remember for how long its uncomfortable feeling echoed deep inside me, having taken over me for years. My life was racing toward its fifth decade at dizzying speed, dragging along all those who made my solitude unbearable; and when I say life, I mean the months and years, because the moments passed agonizingly slowly. I watched my husband, Stelios, sitting hunched over his phone. Absorbed for hours and cut off from me and everything happening around us. He only paused when someone greeted him or when the food arrived, while the rest of the time he continued chatting with his friends, occasionally smiling at some of the videos they sent him. Judging by the way he turned the screen so I couldn’t see it, the content was obviously quite spicy. At least something pleased him.

At the round table where we sat with three other couples, also invited to the wedding of our mutual friends from Stelios’s village, Skioupia, there was only one thing prevailing: alienation. On the one hand, our bodies occupied the same space, but on the other, each of us was traveling somewhere else, most of the time immersed in the microcosm of communication through the phone screen. Across from me, a woman – whom I hadn’t even been introduced to – had made more than ten posts since we arrived, and the only thing I heard her worry about was the filters she used. Ordering her husband to take pictures of her, she kept shouting at him, laughing, Don’t make me look fat, forcing the poor guy to search for the most ideal angle that would cut pounds from her body, squeezed tightly into her narrow dress.

  • Paper quality
  • Was it easy to read?
  • I would read a book by the same author
  • I liked the writing style
  • Was it relatively interesting?
  • I might recommend it for reading
  • Modern, clever phrases that help readers learn to verbalize their emotions. It gives hope and shows that life always flows and doesn't stop just because we got stuck in our routine. We just have to find our own truth, and how much better if love helps us! (Of course, everyone understands the book differently!) - the writing style made it a bit difficult for me - it's the first time I read a book by this author.
