Description

An essential resource for the work of Bernard Tschumi Architects, focusing on how the concept, context, and program interconnect with intuition in unique and unexpected ways. The Event-Cities 5 series is the fifth and final volume from MIT Press that documents recently constructed and unbuilt projects by the renowned architect Bernard Tschumi. This edition expands on the theoretical explorations that have shaped Tschumi's work in practice and education. In this volume, Tschumi takes on what he calls “poetics,” which addresses both the rational processing of work and the irrational surge of inexplicable elements in architectural designs. How do chance, intuition, and analogy interconnect, among other elements, with the logical play of concept, context, and program to produce innovative and informed design? The key points of the volume include circular building projects, projects with hanging gardens and floating rectangular masses, superstructures created through surrealist tactics, a vast educational research complex in France hovering between construction and urban design, a museum in China made from intersecting conical shapes, and a design for a cultural center in Italy structured as an investigation into atriums and façades. The book includes nearly 30 projects developed over the last fifteen years and highlights Tschumi's long-standing interest not only in producing conceptual clarity but also in challenging architecture itself.
